FEMA Launches Online Tool for National Flood Insurance Policies
The Federal Emergency Management Agency launched a digital tool allowing residents in 22,700 communities to purchase National Flood Insurance Program policies online via Floodsmart.gov.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency launched a digital self-service tool on October 20, 2026, enabling homeowners and renters in approximately 22,700 participating communities to purchase National Flood Insurance Program policies entirely online through Floodsmart.gov. Users can provide basic property information to receive a quote and then choose to complete the purchase digitally in a few minutes or work with a licensed insurance agent.
FEMA Administrator Cameron Hamilton stated the initiative aims to reduce bureaucracy and financial risk for Americans, noting that flooding is the most common and costliest natural disaster in the United States and is typically not covered by standard homeowners insurance. In North Carolina alone, the program provides nearly $36 billion in coverage for over 127,000 policyholders. Most policies maintain a 30-day waiting period before coverage becomes effective.
The agency noted that the tool aligns with the Trump administration's America First Resilience Strategy. This strategy promotes a risk-informed approach to encourage property protection and reduce long-term reliance on federal assistance.
