India GDP Grows 7.8% in Q1 FY2027

India's economy grew by 7.8% in the April-June quarter, exceeding central bank forecasts despite global oil shocks and geopolitical conflict in West Asia.

India's real GDP grew by 7.8% in the first quarter of the 2026-27 financial year, surpassing the Reserve Bank of India's 7% projection and median economist estimates of 7.3%. Narendra Modi described the performance as a "herculean feat," attributing the resilience to the collective strength of the Indian people amid oil price shocks and supply chain disruptions caused by conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

Growth was primarily driven by the tertiary sector, which expanded by 10%, with financial, real estate, IT, and professional services growing 12.1%. Manufacturing grew by 9.2%, and gross fixed capital formation surged 11.9%, signaling a potential investment boom in data centers and renewables. The government supported this momentum through a 24% increase in capital expenditure and previous tax cuts to boost household disposable income.

While government officials and some economists hailed India as the fastest-growing major economy, the Indian National Congress challenged the data, claiming it presents a "Greatly Distorted Picture" that masks depressed private investment and unemployment. Additionally, Systematix Shares and Stocks (India) Limited warned that the figures may be overstated due to a deflator anomaly and a K-shaped recovery where growth is driven by government spending rather than broad household income.

Looking forward, the Ministry of Finance warned of downside risks including food inflation driven by an intensifying El Niño and volatile global sovereign bond yields. The Reserve Bank of India has indicated that interest rate hikes remain a possibility if inflation quickens.
