U.S. Sanctions China Firms as Iran and Oman Negotiate
The United States is sanctioning Chinese firms to pressure Iran while Iranian and Omani leaders negotiate the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
The Federal government of the United States is intensifying economic pressure on Iran by targeting its primary trading partners. Scott Bessent announced sanctions against several small firms based in China and Hong Kong, while maintaining the threat of sanctions against a major financial institution to force a resolution to ongoing tensions.
Parallel to these economic measures, leaders from Iran and Oman are conducting negotiations to temporarily reopen the Strait of Hormuz. These talks seek to establish a pathway toward a permanent resolution, a process expected to take between 30 and 60 days. Previous efforts to reopen the waterway have faced intermittent failures.
