Andrés Manuel López Beltrán Accuses US of Political Visa Revocation

Andrés Manuel López Beltrán, a former top official of the Morena party and son of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, announced that the United States revoked his visa. In a letter addressed to President Donald Trump, Andrés Manuel López Beltrán characterized the revocation as a crude and perverse dirty trick and an authoritarian move. He specifically alleged that Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau ordered the cancellation, while denying any criminal or immoral conduct.

President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned the action as an act of interference in Mexican politics. She argued that such measures are not applied consistently across all countries and are politically motivated rather than related to crime. The incident occurs as the Sheinbaum administration manages diplomatic tensions with Washington over trade renegotiations and accusations that some Mexican officials have links to drug cartels.

The United States Department of State has not confirmed the specific revocation of López Beltrán's visa. However, the department reported revoking over 175,000 visas under the Trump administration for reasons including fraud and drugs, while explicitly stating that visa cancellations are used as a strategy to exert control over Latin America. While various Mexican governors and legislators have been targeted, a majority of those affected are members of the Morena party.
