Trump Orders Beef Imports to Lower Prices Amid Rancher Backlash

President Donald Trump signed a proclamation to import up to 300,000 metric tons of lean beef trimmings over 90 days, starting September 1, to combat record-high grocery prices. The administration intends to sell the imported ground beef at 25% below current market rates, delivering the product in three 30-day tranches. To further address supply shortages, the United States Department of Agriculture began reopening southern border ports to Mexican livestock, starting in Arizona.

The move has ignited a fierce rift between the administration and the agricultural sector. Industry groups, including the National Cattlemen's Beef Association and the American Farm Bureau Federation, argue that flooding the market with discounted foreign beef during the peak fall selling season will crash cattle prices and discourage ranchers from rebuilding domestic herds, which are at a 75-year low. Republican lawmakers from ranching states, such as Senators Tim Sheehy and John Barrasso, have criticized the plan as market manipulation that undercuts American producers.

In an attempt to mitigate the backlash, Trump authorized legal measures to roll back beef processing regulations, allowing farmers and ranchers to process their own livestock for commercial sale to bypass the perceived monopoly of the four largest meatpackers. Simultaneously, the president initiated a trade war with Canada, imposing 50% duties on billions of dollars of Canadian goods after trade talks collapsed, leading to retaliatory tariffs from Canada on U.S. steel and aluminum.
