Narendra Modi Marks 25 Years as Head of Government

Prime Minister Narendra Modi completed 25 years of continuous executive leadership, surpassing the previous Indian record for the longest-serving head of an elected government.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked 25 years of continuous leadership as a head of government on October 7, 2026. His tenure began with his appointment as Chief Minister of Gujarat on October 7, 2001, and continued through his appointment as Prime Minister in May 2014. In reaching this milestone, Modi surpassed the previous Indian record of 24 years and 165 days held by former Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling.

To commemorate the occasion, the Union Cabinet passed a resolution on October 6 honoring Modi's journey, which Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated was guided by the principle of "Nation First and Citizen First." The resolution highlighted achievements in poverty alleviation, infrastructure, and national security, specifically citing the 2016 Surgical Strikes, 2019 Balakot Air Strikes, and 2025 Operation Sindoor. During the same cabinet meeting, the government approved a Rs 10,000 crore SME Growth Fund and the creation of the Integrated Transport and Logistics Authority.

Modi observed the milestone by offering prayers at the Shri Vinayaka Temple in New Delhi and concluding the Seva Sankalp Yatra with events in Vadnagar and Varanasi. Vice President CP Radhakrishnan praised the Prime Minister for liberating 25 crore people from extreme poverty, a claim supported by World Bank data showing a decrease in extreme poverty from 16.2 percent in 2011-12 to 2.3 percent in 2022-23. The Manipur Cabinet also adopted a resolution expressing gratitude for Modi's developmental focus on the Northeast region.
