Nigerian Officials Defend Reforms and Push for Tinubu Re-election
Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele and other government officials are defending economic reforms and urging continuity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele announced that international investors are pricing in the likelihood of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's re-election in 2027, expecting continuity in current economic reforms. Speaking at the IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok, Oyedele stated the government is targeting a seven percent economic growth rate and aims to reduce inflation to low single digits to lower business interest rates.
Oyedele emphasized that the government will not return to fuel subsidies or multiple exchange rates, clarifying that recent petrol discounts by NNPC Retail were commercial decisions rather than state subsidies. He warned that reversing these measures would trigger capital flight and increase pressure on the naira. To stimulate growth, the government has presented 65 investment projects valued at $78.5 billion across the energy, mining, and healthcare sectors.
Supporting these policies, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike and retired Major General Adeniyi Oyebade characterized the reforms as essential to prevent economic collapse. Wike described the economy as having been in a comatose state before the current administration took office. During a Rainbow Coalition event in Rivers State, Wike urged Nigerians to support the All Progressives Congress in the 2027 elections to protect the country's economic trajectory, warning against the election of political gamblers.
