Peter Obi and Lawmakers Demand President Tinubu's Resignation

Peter Obi and House Minority leaders demand President Bola Tinubu resign over governance failures, citing national insecurity and economic hardship.

Opposition figures and lawmakers have called for the resignation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, citing a crisis of insecurity and economic failure. Peter Obi, presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress, demanded Tinubu's resignation on June 22, 2026, comparing the situation to the recent resignation of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Obi cited failed campaign promises regarding electricity and citizen welfare as evidence of a monumental failure in governance.

Simultaneously, the House of Representatives Minority Caucus, led by Minority Leader Fred Agbedi, urged the president to implement a six-month National Security and Economic Recovery Plan or quit office. Agbedi also demanded that the president suspend all 2027 election activities to focus on citizen welfare. These calls were further amplified by the OK Movement, a supporter group for Obi and Rabi’u Kwankwaso, which echoed the demand for accountable leadership.

The Presidency and its allies dismissed the calls as politically motivated. Presidential aide Bayo Onanuga described Obi's demands as childish and anti-democratic, arguing that the comparison to the UK's parliamentary system is flawed. The administration defended its record by citing GDP growth, the neutralizing of 15,000 terrorists, and infrastructure projects like the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. Additional criticism of the opposition came from the Parliamentary Advocacy Centre and Philip Agbese, who claimed the demands were part of a conspiracy to secure the 2027 elections.
