Russia Threatens Nuclear Strike as NATO Scrambles Jets

Russia threatened nuclear action over Kaliningrad while NATO scrambled fighter jets near Romania and Russian forces intensified drone and missile strikes across Ukraine.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) scrambled Spanish F-18 fighter jets on September 28 and 29 after radar detected aerial targets near the Romanian border with Ukraine. The Romanian Ministry of National Defence issued population alerts in northern Tulcea County during the second incident, though no incursions into national airspace were confirmed.

Simultaneously, Russia escalated its nuclear rhetoric. The Russian embassy in the UK and President Vladimir Putin warned that any NATO military action against Russian territory, specifically the Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad, would be met with all available means, including the deployment of the country's entire nuclear arsenal. NATO spokesperson Allison Hart confirmed the alliance responded to a Russian non-paper by asserting that NATO is a defensive alliance and poses no risk to Russia.

These tensions coincide with intensified Russian military operations in Ukraine. On September 30, high-speed, high-altitude jet-powered drones and missiles struck Kyiv, killing at least two people and forcing university closures. Russian forces also targeted data centers in Kyiv, military-linked vessels in Odesa and the Black Sea, and a school in Sumy, where glide bombs killed two people.

Despite the escalation, diplomatic channels remain open as Russian envoy Kirill Nagiev met with U.S. officials in Washington to discuss energy projects and a peaceful resolution. Meanwhile, leaked documents indicate Russia plans to increase its 2027 defense spending to 17.1 trillion roubles.
