Ukraine Pauses Oil Tanker Strikes After U.S. Request
Ukraine has suspended drone attacks on non-Russian oil tankers at Novorossiysk to protect U.S. business interests and global energy supplies following a request from JD Vance.
The Government of Ukraine has paused drone strikes on oil tankers and infrastructure linked to the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) at the Russian port of Novorossiysk. The decision follows a July 31 request from U.S. Vice President JD Vance, who warned that Ukrainian attacks were destabilizing global oil markets and harming American firms, including Chevron and ExxonMobil. Ukraine agreed to spare CPC facilities and non-Russian vessels, provided they are not under Ukrainian sanctions or transporting Russian cargo.
Kyiv's compliance is reportedly linked to an urgent need for U.S. authorization to manufacture Patriot interceptor missiles before winter. The strikes had previously caused a 14% drop in Kazakhstan's oil production in July and pushed freight costs for Black Sea tankers to record highs of $440,948 per day.
Despite the pause on oil infrastructure, Ukraine launched a massive "unique operation" on August 12 targeting the Novorossiysk naval base, which President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described as the last major stronghold of the Russian fleet in the Black Sea. Using Neptune missiles and jet-powered drones, the attack hit piers and air defenses. Russia responded with a retaliatory strike involving 138 drones and missiles across Ukraine, including attacks on Odesa and Zaporizhzhia. Russian officials claimed the Novorossiysk strikes also disabled grain terminals, which they argue exacerbates global food shortages.
