Hakeem Jeffries Vows Supreme Court Overhaul if Democrats Regain Power

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries announced on Thursday that Democrats intend to overhaul the Supreme Court if they regain power in Washington. Speaking at the National Association of Black Journalists convention in Atlanta, Jeffries characterized the court's conservative wing as a subsidiary of Donald Trump's Make America Great Again movement.

Proposed reforms include expanding the number of justices, with former Vice President Kamala Harris suggesting a total of 13, imposing 18-year term limits, and establishing a binding judicial code of ethics. These proposals follow Democratic frustration over rulings regarding abortion and Black voter representation. Jeffries expressed support for changing Senate rules to bypass the 60-vote filibuster threshold to pass such legislation.

Donald Trump responded by warning that Democrats seek the complete and total obliteration of the court. He urged Republicans to eliminate the filibuster to facilitate his own priorities. Other Democratic figures, including Texas House nominee Colin Allred, have argued that the court has sacrificed its legitimacy and must be responded to accordingly.
