Pope Leo XIV Meets Hungarian and Portuguese Leaders

Pope Leo XIV held two private audiences at the Vatican on Thursday, meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar and Portuguese President António José Seguro. During the first meeting, the Pope and Magyar discussed the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, the societal impact of artificial intelligence, and loneliness among young people.

Magyar, who took office after the April 12 elections ended Viktor Orbán's 16-year tenure, presented the Pope with memoirs of Cardinal József Mindszenty. He also invited the Pope to visit Hungary and requested a papal blessing for the country.

In the subsequent audience, President Seguro and the Pope discussed migration, international law, multilateralism, and the repercussions of global conflicts. Seguro renewed an invitation for the Pope to visit Portugal in 2027 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the apostolic nunciature.
