Federal Reserve Debates AI Impact on Economic Policy
Federal Reserve officials are debating whether artificial intelligence will lower inflation through productivity or trigger economic shocks and financial instability.
The Federal Reserve System is integrating the economic impact of artificial intelligence into its policy debates, according to minutes from its most recent meeting. Policymakers remain divided on whether AI will serve as a disinflationary force by increasing productivity or create new price pressures by driving up aggregate demand and the cost of consumer goods.
Chairman Kevin Warsh argues that AI will improve American standards of living and competitiveness. Conversely, other officials warn of a potential economic shock if AI fails to deliver on its promises, which could lead to a stock market repricing, reduced consumer spending, and strain on financial institutions with high AI-related lending exposure.
Labor market pressures are also emerging as AI displaces white-collar roles while increasing demand for specialized construction workers. Lorie K. Logan, President of the Dallas Fed, specifically noted labor shortages caused by the construction of data centers. Beyond labor and inflation, the United States Department of the Treasury has summoned bank leaders to address new cybersecurity risks introduced by AI to the banking sector.
