Andy Burnham Pledges to Nationalize Water and Limit Home Buying

Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced a major shift toward left-wing policies during the Labour Party's annual conference, pledging to dismantle the legacy of Margaret Thatcher. Burnham vowed to end the ideological ban on public ownership of water companies and scrap legislation that prevents the government from nationalizing private firms. He characterized the current privatized water system as a "national scandal" defined by leaking pipes, rising bills, and pollution.

The proposed water industry legislation aims to eliminate greedy bonuses, close regulatory loopholes, and allow mayors to hold companies accountable. Burnham stated the government will collaborate with private firms that serve the public interest but will seize greater public control over those that do not.

On housing, Burnham announced that future council tenants will be barred from buying their homes, though existing tenants will retain the right to buy. He further stated that councils will take over empty homes owned by private landlords and may seize occupied private rentals if they are in poor condition. Burnham promised a comprehensive plan later this year to increase state control over basic services over the next decade, arguing that the UK took the wrong path when it privatized transport, care, and water services in the 1980s.
