Trump Urges Congress to End Birthright Citizenship After Court Ruling

Donald Trump called for legislation to end birthright citizenship after the Supreme Court maintained the policy by ruling on the procedural use of nationwide injunctions.

Donald Trump urged Congress to enact legislation ending birthright citizenship after the Supreme Court of the United States issued a ruling that kept the policy in effect. The Court did not rule on the constitutionality of birthright citizenship under the 14th Amendment, but instead addressed the procedural authority of lower courts to issue nationwide injunctions against federal policies.

In response to the decision, the Trump administration increased enforcement efforts to combat birth tourism by targeting visa fraud and businesses facilitating such schemes. House Speaker Mike Johnson stated that birth tourism has devalued the 14th Amendment and suggested that reversing the court's position would likely require a constitutional amendment.

Bipartisan frustration grew in Washington as Democrats simultaneously opposed a separate Supreme Court ruling allowing the president to fire officials at independent agencies. To counter the court's influence, Democrats discussed institutional reforms including an ethics code, expanding the court, and reforming the Senate filibuster. Senator Cory Booker argued that filibuster reform is necessary to pass democratic and disclosure laws that Republicans typically oppose.
