Senator Mike Lee Blocks Bill Protecting Kennedy Center

Senator Mike Lee of Utah blocked a bipartisan bill on Monday night that would have prohibited Donald Trump from demolishing the Kennedy Center and other congressional-designated presidential memorials without explicit legislative approval. The Protecting Presidential Memorials Act was co-written by Senators Jeff Merkley and Lisa Murkowski to prevent the potential loss of the venue.

The legislative effort follows legal battles during Donald Trump's second term, including a failed attempt by a Trump-appointed board to rename the venue the Trump-Kennedy Center. Federal judge Christopher Cooper halted the renaming and a planned closure, leading Donald Trump to threaten the cancellation of a $257 million renovation unless the ruling is reversed. Justice Department lawyers previously suggested the building could decay to the point of demolition, proposing an outdoor amphitheater as a replacement.

Senator Lee defended his objection, characterizing the bill as partisan scaremongering and urging the Senate to focus on election security and the cost of living instead. Senator Merkley argued that the effort to destroy the building stemmed from the fact that the law prevents Trump from putting his name on the center, while Senator Murkowski emphasized that the demolition of the center was not authorized.
