Jamie Dimon Warns UK Higher Bank Taxes Risk Investment
JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon warned that increasing banking taxes could jeopardize a planned £3 billion London headquarters and weaken Britain's ability to attract capital.
JPMorgan Chase & Co. CEO Jamie Dimon warned that increasing banking taxes could weaken the ability of Britain to attract capital. During a July 16 appearance on The Master Investor Podcast, Dimon cautioned that an uncompetitive tax system might cause investment to leave the country.
Dimon described any increase in the bank levy or corporation tax surcharge as "one more negative" factor when assessing the attractiveness of the UK. He specifically linked these concerns to the bank's planned £3 billion London headquarters, suggesting that higher taxes could jeopardize the project. While he did not confirm a final decision on the site, he indicated the outcome would not be a simple binary choice.
Beyond tax policy, Dimon noted the trend of companies delisting from London as a significant challenge for capital markets. He also expressed concerns regarding global government debt and deficits, as well as the volatility of long-dated bonds and the long-term returns of artificial intelligence. During the same discussion, Dimon praised departing UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves.
