UK Prime Minister Considers Delaying Defense Spending Roadmap
Prime Minister Andy Burnham may delay the announcement of a plan to increase defense spending to 3% of GDP amid rising security threats.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham is considering delaying the announcement of a roadmap to increase United Kingdom defense spending to 3% of GDP. The potential delay affects a key milestone toward meeting a NATO target of 3.5% spending by 2035. While Finance Minister John Healey previously indicated that a path to the 3% goal would be outlined in a spring 2027 spending review, reports suggest the review may now be pushed to October 2027.
A finance ministry spokesperson dismissed these reports as "pure rumour and speculation," stating that the date of the Spending Review has not been set. The Office for Budget Responsibility estimates that reaching the 3% interim goal would require an additional £17.3 billion.
This funding debate occurs alongside heightened security concerns. On October 4, the United States removed bombers from an airbase in England following a suspected Iranian plot.
