APC Chieftain Defends Tinubu Economic Reforms Amid Hardship
Olatunbosun Oyintiloye argues that President Bola Tinubu's economic reforms are necessary for long-term prosperity despite causing significant short-term hardship for Nigerians.
Former lawmaker and APC chieftain Olatunbosun Oyintiloye stated that economic reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu since May 2023 have fundamentally reshaped Nigeria's economic direction. Speaking in Osogbo ahead of the country's 66th Independence Anniversary, Oyintiloye noted that the removal of petrol subsidies and foreign exchange market reforms have successfully unified exchange rates, improved the trade balance, and rebuilt foreign reserves.
However, Oyintiloye acknowledged that these shifts triggered significant adjustment costs, including higher food and transportation prices and increased import costs driven by the depreciation of the naira. He recognized the resulting pressure on household welfare and purchasing power but argued that returning to the previous system would only postpone an inevitable crisis.
Oyintiloye urged Nigerians to remain patient, asserting that the administration is converting resources freed from subsidies into tangible benefits for the population. He maintained that the ultimate test of these reforms will be their impact on production, investment, and the general standard of living.
