UK Jets Intercept Russian Aircraft Near HMS Prince of Wales
British F-35 jets intercepted a Russian Bear-F patrol aircraft that dropped sonobuoys near the HMS Prince of Wales in the Norwegian Sea on July 2.
Two Royal Air Force F-35 fighter jets intercepted a Russian Tupolev Tu-142 Bear-F maritime patrol aircraft in the Norwegian Sea on July 2, 2026. The Russian aircraft repeatedly approached the aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales at low altitude and flew unnecessarily close to the carrier strike group, dropping numerous sonobuoys used for submarine detection. The Ministry of Defence characterized the maneuvers as unsafe and unprofessional, noting that the Russian crew failed to respond to contact attempts on international frequencies.
The carrier strike group was deployed off Iceland under NATO command as part of Operation Firecrest and the Arctic Sentry mission to bolster security in the North Atlantic. This marked the first instance of NATO conducting air policing operations from a European aircraft carrier. Following the encounter, the F-35s escorted the Russian aircraft until it left the area.
Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis warned that Russia's reckless military actions risk miscalculation and escalation, stating that the threat exists across every domain from cyberspace to underwater. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte condemned the Russian actions as unprofessional and praised the British military's response. The incident occurs amid broader tensions, including a planned NATO meeting in Ankara to pledge 70 billion euros for Ukraine and a separate UK government announcement of a 15 billion pound increase in military spending.
