Governor Greg Abbott Blocks DFW Airport Islamic Washing Stations
Governor Greg Abbott forced Dallas Fort Worth International Airport to cancel plans for Islamic washing stations by threatening to withdraw state airport grants.
Dallas Fort Worth International Airport canceled plans to install additional Islamic foot-washing stations after Greg Abbott, the Governor of Texas, threatened to withdraw state airport grants. Abbott argued that the ablution facilities, used by Muslims for ritual washing before prayer, constitute illegal religious discrimination by providing special treatment to one subset of the population based on religion.
Following a letter from State Senator Tan Parker questioning the project's approval process, Abbott requested that U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy investigate both DFW and Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport, as both facilities maintain existing stations. DFW Airport officials stated they accelerated their internal review due to elevated public interest and determined the project would not proceed because it would not deliver the originally anticipated operational benefits.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations condemned the Governor's actions as an anti-Muslim political stunt and a manufactured controversy. The organization argued that the stations are universally accessible amenities similar to interfaith prayer rooms and urged the Governor to focus on state issues such as school shootings and economic inequality.
