Trump Expands ICE to 22,000 Officers for Mass Deportations

President Donald Trump has expanded U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) into a national force of 22,000 officers to execute a crackdown aiming to deport 1 million people annually. Funded by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act enacted in July 2025, the agency's budget rose to $85 billion, making it the highest-funded federal law enforcement agency. This funding includes a $75 billion supplement and $45 billion dedicated to expanding detention capacity to hold 100,000 people daily.

The surge in personnel and resources led to aggressive enforcement actions in cities including Los Angeles, Chicago, and Minneapolis. In Minneapolis, the shooting death of Renee Good by an ICE officer sparked widespread protests. In response, Trump threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act and placed 1,500 U.S. Army soldiers on readiness for deployment. The administration reports 600,000 arrests and 1.9 million voluntary self-deportations since January 2025.

Democratic lawmakers have called for restrictions on ICE operations and the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, citing a spike in custodial deaths and a lack of funding for immigration judges. Conversely, House Speaker Mike Johnson urged opponents to stop obstructing federal law enforcement. While illegal border crossings have reached historic lows, critics argue the budget disproportionately favors enforcement over judicial review.
