Indian Lawmakers Use Gen Z Slang in Paper Leak Debate

Members of India's Lok Sabha utilized Gen Z slang and internet memes during a Tuesday debate on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026. The legislation, which proposes a minimum five-year jail term for exam paper leaks and the creation of fast-track courts, follows the July 25 resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan after nationwide protests led by the Cockroach Janta Party.

Bansuri Swaraj and other ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) MPs used terms such as 'clock it', 'delulu', 'FOMO', and 'MIA' to praise Prime Minister Narendra Modi's legislative approach and mock the opposition's protest efforts. Tejasvi Surya and Shrikant Lata Eknath Shinde specifically used the slang to describe opposition leaders as delusional for believing they had the support of the youth.

Opposition leaders including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Gaurav Gogoi, and Supriya Sule dismissed the amendment as a cosmetic exercise. They criticized the government for treating student grievances too lightly and argued that stylized social media outreach would not win over Gen Z. To address these tensions, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju coordinated an extension of the debate from six to eight hours after agreements with parties including the Congress and DMK.
