North Korea Vows Response to U.S. Missile Sales to South Korea

The Government of North Korea condemned the United States' approval of AIM-9X tactical missile sales to South Korea, labeling the transaction a hostile act that destabilizes regional security. Pyongyang vowed a serious, immediate and powerful response to the weapons sale and criticized U.S. funding for initiatives addressing human rights violations within North Korea.

This diplomatic escalation follows a recent barrage of short-range ballistic missiles fired by North Korea. The tension persists despite efforts by President Donald Trump to revive dialogue with Kim Jong Un, including a recent order to reduce joint U.S.-South Korea military drills based on Trump's relationship with the North Korean leader.

North Korean officials maintain that Washington remains permanently hostile. The approved missile sales are intended to improve the air defense capabilities of South Korea.
