Iran Destroys 20 Percent of US Reaper Drone Fleet

Iranian forces have destroyed between 24 and 30 US MQ-9 Reaper drones since a joint US-Israeli bombing campaign began on February 28, 2026. The losses, which total nearly $1 billion, represent approximately 20% of the Pentagon's prewar inventory. Because General Atomics no longer manufactures Reapers for the US military, these losses are considered critical.

Donald Trump described recent negotiations as being "on the borderline" between agreement and renewed escalation. While an uneasy ceasefire has remained in place since April 8, occasional strikes continue. The US has also lost several crewed aircraft, including F-15E Strike Eagles and an A-10 Thunderbolt II, along with expensive radar systems and thousands of precision munitions.

US drones were lost through a combination of mid-flight shoot-downs, ground-based missile strikes, and operational accidents. Some officials have suggested a renewed military push under the name "Operation Sledgehammer" if current diplomatic talks fail.
