Parades Commissioner Billy Gamble Resigns After High Court Ruling

Parades Commissioner Billy Gamble resigned on August 27, 2026, after the High Court quashed the Parades Commission's decision to restrict the Orange Order's annual Drumcree parade in Portadown. Judge McAlinden criticized the commission for sloppy procedures and shortcuts, noting that the final restrictions on the July march were not reviewed by all commission members.

Billy Gamble stepped down following the disclosure of private emails in which he described mediation over the parade route as a non-starter, leading to accusations of bias. Secretary of State Chris Bryant accepted the resignation and demanded written assurances from the commission regarding the fairness of its decision-making process.

While Unionist politicians and the Orange Order called for the entire commission to stand down, Chair Professor Evelyn Collins refused to resign. She stated that the commission is committed to fulfilling its responsibilities and has initiated a review of all processes to ensure they are lawful and follow best practice. Prime Minister Andy Burnham expressed confidence that trust in the body would be restored.

The Parades Commission has blocked the Orange Order from marching along the nationalist Garvaghy Road every year since 1998. Following the ruling, the Orange Order intends to apply for another Drumcree parade, while Garvaghy Road residents maintain that such parades should not be repeated.
