UK Energy Secretary to Recommend Jackdaw Gas Field Approval

Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh is expected to recommend approval for the Jackdaw gas field off the coast of Aberdeen as soon as next week. Formal approval from the North Sea Transition Authority could follow in mid-September. The project, operated by the Shell and Equinor joint venture Adura, is 99% complete and could deliver gas by winter.

Both Jackdaw and the larger £8.7bn Rosebank oil field were previously approved but were halted by a Court of Session ruling in Edinburgh. The court required more detailed climate impact assessments regarding the burning of extracted fuels. A decision on Rosebank is expected later this year, with officials considering redirecting its tax revenues toward clean energy projects via the national wealth fund.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham advocates for a pragmatic approach to domestic energy to fund the green transition. Conversely, the environmental group Uplift argues that further drilling is unconscionable and will not meaningfully lower energy bills. Industry proponents maintain the projects are vital for energy security and supporting jobs in northeast Scotland.
