Becerra and Hilton Clash at NALEO Conference in Los Angeles

Democratic candidate Xavier Becerra and Republican candidate Steve Hilton courted Latino voters at the NALEO conference, exchanging insults over political ties and personal backgrounds.

Democratic candidate Xavier Becerra and Republican candidate Steve Hilton addressed the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) annual conference in Los Angeles on July 15, 2026. The appearance marked one of the first joint events for the candidates since the June 2 primary, in which Becerra led with 28% of the vote compared to Hilton's 24.6%.

Becerra criticized Hilton by linking him to President Donald Trump, whom he labeled a "false prophet." He accused Trump of starting a "reckless, illegal war" and mocked Hilton for previously describing a Del Taco taco as a "street taco." Becerra also praised NALEO for its role in developing Latino leadership.

Hilton, a former Fox News host and U.K. immigrant, focused his remarks on the difficulties facing California's working class and small business owners under current state regulations. While acknowledging Trump's endorsement, Hilton emphasized his personal journey of climbing the ladder of opportunity.

Following the conference, Hilton dismissed Becerra's criticisms as "silly jokes and insults" and characterized his opponent as a "36-year career politician."
