NATO Unveils 'Theory of Victory' to Deter Russian Aggression
General Alexus Grynkewich revealed a new NATO strategy to block and break potential Russian attacks while the alliance faces internal tension over U.S. policy shifts.
NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe Alexus Gregory Grynkewich unveiled a classified military strategy termed the Eastern Flank Deterrence Initiative during the Warsaw Security Forum. The "theory of victory" employs a three-phase "block, blunt and break" approach designed to thwart a Russian assault by immediately blocking border attacks, blunting offensives through multi-domain strikes, and breaking the enemy by dismantling command and supply networks. The plan integrates an autonomous zone of drones and robots, a cloud-based data backbone for real-time targeting, and long-range missile strikes against command posts in Belarus and Russian cities including Kaliningrad and St. Petersburg.
Grynkewich stated that NATO is "ready to fight tonight," though he assessed the current risk of a major attack as relatively low. He emphasized that the strategy aims to neutralize attacking forces without seeking Russia's wider strategic defeat to minimize the risk of nuclear escalation. This disclosure follows a surge in Russian hybrid campaigns, including cyberattacks and the discovery of an explosive drone at a German airport.
The military buildup coincides with significant diplomatic volatility. President Donald Trump has unilaterally eased sanctions to import Russian diesel and suggested Ukraine "get a new president," prompting Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk to warn that weakening Ukraine undermines national sovereignty. Simultaneously, the United States Department of War is reviewing force deployments in Europe, creating uncertainty regarding the U.S. military presence. In response to these tensions, France recently test-fired a submarine-launched ballistic missile to demonstrate deterrence, while Russia has warned it would use nuclear weapons to defend its territory, specifically the Kaliningrad exclave.
