Tinubu and Atiku Clash Over Nigeria's Pension Backlogs

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar engaged in a public dispute over Nigeria's pension backlogs in July 2026. During a meeting with Northeast political stakeholders at the State House in Abuja, Tinubu accused Atiku of privatizing government assets and failing to pay pensioners during his tenure as Vice President under Olusegun Obasanjo. Tinubu stated that his current administration is working to clear the pension backlog and resolve the mess created during that era.

Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress, dismissed the President's claims as untenable frivolity and futile political shadow chasing. He defended the 1999–2007 administration, noting they inherited a deficit exceeding 2 trillion naira. Atiku highlighted the enactment of the Pension Reform Act of 2004 and the creation of the National Pension Commission as revolutionary steps that modernized the sector.

Atiku further criticized the current administration for wasting national time and resources on blaming predecessors from two decades ago. He urged the government to instead focus on resetting salient issues including hunger, mass youth unemployment, and unabated insecurity.
