Ukraine Marks National Flag Day and Independence Anniversary
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy led National Flag Day ceremonies in Kyiv ahead of the 35th anniversary of Ukraine's independence.
Ukraine observed National Flag Day on August 23, 2026, leading into the 35th anniversary of its Independence Day on August 24. In Kyiv, Volodymyr Zelenskyy attended ceremonies where participants raised the national flag, sang the national anthem, and observed a minute of silence for those killed in the ongoing war against Russia.
Addressing military personnel, Zelenskyy stated that the flag "symbolises what is most precious" to the soldiers defending the country. These celebrations occur during the fifth year of the conflict with the Federal Government of Russia.
Observers noted that the defense of Ukraine serves as a cornerstone of Euro-Atlantic security and represents a struggle for the survival of the Western democratic order against Russian aggression.
