NEH Awards $40 Million for Trump-Aligned Humanities Projects

The National Endowment for the Humanities announced $40 million in federal grants for humanities projects aligned with the agenda of President Donald Trump. Nearly one-third of the current cycle's funding is dedicated to the United States' 250th anniversary, following a January 2025 executive order that prioritizes the Revolutionary War and the Founding Fathers. One recipient, the Mariners' Museum and Park in Newport News, Virginia, will use the funds to conserve artifacts from the 1781 Siege of Yorktown.

This funding shift follows the administration's 2025 termination of more than 1,400 grants that contained diversity and equity components. Although a federal judge ruled those terminations unconstitutional in May and ordered funds to be restored, the Trump administration's proposed 2027 budget calls for the complete elimination of the NEH.

Sarah Weicksel, Executive Director of the American Historical Association, noted that while funding for the anniversary period makes sense, it remains unclear if future opportunities will maintain this specific emphasis. Phoebe Stein, President of the Federation of State Humanities Councils, stated that local communities across the country are the ones suffering due to the funding delays.
