Netanyahu Unveils Preemptive Strike Doctrine Before Parliamentary Elections

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a new national security doctrine prioritizing preemptive strikes and buffer zones nine days before Israel's parliamentary elections.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a new three-page national security doctrine on October 19, nine days before the October 27 parliamentary elections. Developed with the National Security Council, the strategy advocates for a shift toward preemptive strikes over containment and the establishment of border buffer zones.

Netanyahu claims that recent military operations in Gaza, Lebanon, Yemen, and Iran have dismantled an Iranian-led network and prevented nuclear annihilation. The doctrine also calls for increased domestic arms production and investments in quantum computing and artificial intelligence.

Opposition leaders Yair Lapid and Gadi Eisenkot dismissed the strategy as superficial and characterized it as a campaign tool intended to mask security failures that preceded the October 2023 Hamas attacks. Eisenkot challenged the Prime Minister's claims of military success, asserting that Hezbollah and Hamas still maintain significant capabilities and that the document creates a strategic vacuum due to a lack of detailed operational plans.
