Mark Carney Urges Expanded Trade With Caribbean Nations
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called for increased trade and investment with Caribbean nations during a Commonwealth leaders meeting in Antigua and Barbuda.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called for expanded trade and investment with Caribbean nations during a working breakfast of Commonwealth leaders in St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda, on November 3, 2026. Carney stated that current trade, valued at $4 billion annually, only "scratches the surface of what’s possible."
The diplomatic effort is part of a broader strategy by the Carney administration to pivot Canada away from its economic dependence on the United States and leverage the Commonwealth to gain support in multilateral forums. Discussions with regional leaders focused on strengthening supply chains, regional security, and climate resilience for small island developing states.
As part of the visit, Carney held bilateral meetings with Prime Minister Gaston Browne of Antigua and Barbuda, as well as leaders from Australia, Guyana, and Ghana. The itinerary also included a lunch hosted by King Charles for new heads of government.
