BJP Wins Rajasthan Urban Local Body Elections

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the Rajasthan urban local body elections, securing 4,179 of 10,245 wards compared to 3,613 for the Indian National Congress. The BJP won a narrow victory by a margin of 0.94 percentage points, capturing 35.18% of the total vote against the Congress's 34.24%. Independent candidates emerged as a significant force, winning 2,273 seats and capturing 27.38% of the vote share.

The BJP secured majorities in four of the ten municipal corporations, including Jaipur, Udaipur, Kota, and Bhilwara. In Jaipur, the BJP won 78 of 146 declared wards, though technical failures with electronic voting machines necessitated repolls in four remaining wards. The Congress performed strongly in Bikaner and Ajmer, where the BJP lost for the first time in 36 years. The Aam Aadmi Party also secured a surprise majority in the Baran Municipal Council.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the result as a "triumph of truth over the jhooth ki goonj (echo of lies)," attributing the win to the development policies of the "double-engine government." Conversely, Congress leaders Govind Singh Dotasra and Ashok Gehlot accused the BJP of using police and government machinery to intimidate councillors and influence results. They claimed the gap between the two parties has narrowed significantly.

While the BJP celebrated the mandate, some candidates faced stark losses; for instance, BJP candidate Kailashchand received only one vote in Parbatsar's Ward 13. Elections for chairpersons and deputy chairpersons are scheduled for September 21 and 22.
