Togo President Faure Gnassingbé Visits China for Tech Investment
Faure Gnassingbé met with President Xi Jinping in Beijing to secure Chinese investment in agriculture and port infrastructure to support Togo's Vision 2040 plan.
President of the Council of Ministers Faure Gnassingbé met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on October 13, 2026, during an eight-day official visit to China. Invited by Premier Li Qiang, Gnassingbé is seeking investment and technology in farm infrastructure and port management to support Togo's Vision 2040 economic plan.
As part of the visit, Gnassingbé toured a smart-farming park in Shaanxi province, where the Kara region of Togo signed a memorandum of understanding with Shaanxi province for cooperation in energy, environmental protection, and agriculture. He also visited a special economic zone in Xiamen to study port models for the Port of Lomé.
The diplomatic push follows a 55% increase in trade between the two nations, which reached US$5.4 billion in 2025. The shift toward Chinese agricultural technology comes after the Millennium Challenge Corporation, a U.S. government aid agency, terminated a funded land reform project in Togo in December 2025.
