Democrats Secure 22 State Trifectas in 2026 Elections

The Democratic Party flipped a dozen legislative chambers and secured 22 state trifectas, surpassing Republicans for the first time since 2009.

The Democratic Party achieved significant gains in the November 4, 2026, statehouse elections, flipping a dozen legislative chambers and securing full control, or trifectas, in six states. This shift brings the total number of Democratic trifectas to 22, surpassing the 17 held by Republicans for the first time since 2009. Republicans lost trifectas in Georgia, Iowa, New Hampshire, Ohio, and Texas, with some analysts attributing the losses to voter dissatisfaction with President Trump.

Notable gains occurred in Arizona, where Democrats will lead both chambers for the first time in 60 years, and in Texas and Georgia, where they retook the House after more than two decades. In Pennsylvania, Governor Josh Shapiro now oversees a Democratic trifecta for the first time since 1993. Democratic leaders in newly flipped states, including Wisconsin and Arizona, have pledged to prioritize public education funding, reproductive rights, and healthcare costs.

Republican state Senator Kim Ward warned that the results would have "significant consequences" for Pennsylvania, including higher taxes and power grid challenges. Conversely, Democratic leaders expressed confidence in their ability to address voter concerns, with Wisconsin Assembly leader Greta Neubauer stating the party is "very attuned to the challenges" people are facing.
