Right-Wing Latin American Leaders Form Alliances With Donald Trump

Right-wing leaders across Latin America are establishing explicit personal and political alliances that mirror the tactics of Donald Trump. These leaders are openly intervening in each other's domestic elections and aligning their ideological platforms against socialism and "wokismo."

This trend is highlighted by Argentina's President Javier Milei, whose public endorsement of Brazilian candidate Flávio Bolsonaro in São Paulo led Brazil to recall its ambassador and downgrade diplomatic relations. Similarly, Colombia's President Abelardo De La Espriella has aligned with the Trump administration to secure financial aid and coordinate joint military operations.

These alliances are formalized through the Shield of the Americas security cooperation, which held its inaugural summit at Trump's Doral resort in Florida. Participating leaders are also adopting security measures such as "megaprisons" modeled after the system implemented by El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele. While these partnerships provide access to U.S. financial lifelines, they risk isolating participating nations from major regional trading partners like Brazil and Mexico.
