Trump Administration Withholds $15 Billion in Los Angeles Fire Aid

Survivors of the January 2025 Los Angeles firestorm are experiencing the longest delay for federal disaster aid in modern history. Nearly 600 days after the blazes killed 31 people and destroyed over 16,000 structures, more than $15 billion in recovery funds remain unappropriated.

Donald Trump and his administration face accusations from Democratic officials and attorneys general from 25 states of politicizing the aid. Critics allege the administration is conducting a "campaign of coercion" to force states to adopt specific immigration and voting policies in exchange for grants. California Governor Gavin Newsom has submitted multiple requests for billions to rebuild infrastructure and housing, but the funds have not been released.

The delay has left two-thirds of survivors displaced and burdened by increasing debt. Similar funding concerns have emerged regarding recent destructive blazes in Spokane, Washington. The Department of Angels, a non-profit tracking the recovery, reported that the lack of federal resources has stalled the rebuilding process for affected communities.
