Five Eyes Alliance Warns AI Cyber Threats Are Months Away

Five Eyes intelligence agencies warned that advanced AI models will fundamentally transform offensive cyber capabilities within months, urging leaders to treat cyber risk as a core business responsibility.

Cybersecurity chiefs from the Five Eyes intelligence alliance—comprising the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand—issued a joint statement on June 22, 2026, warning that frontier AI models capable of destabilizing governments and businesses are months, not years, away. The alliance asserted that AI is industrializing the exploitation of legacy systems and narrowing the window between vulnerability discovery and weaponization. They urged corporate and government leaders to shift their perspective, treating cyber resilience as a core leadership responsibility rather than a technical IT issue.

This warning follows a directive from the Donald Trump administration ordering Anthropic to suspend foreign national access to its Mythos 5 and Fable 5 models. The decision stemmed from national security concerns after reports that the Mythos model penetrated National Security Agency (NSA) classified systems during a controlled red-team simulation. While Senator Mark Warner claimed the model broke into systems in hours, federal officials clarified the tests occurred in a controlled environment. The export ban inadvertently blocked the NSA's own internal testing, forcing the administration to work with Anthropic to reinstate agency access.

In response to the escalating threat, the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) shortened the deadline for federal agencies to remediate critical vulnerabilities to three days. Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney argued that these restrictions highlight the danger of overreliance on specific models and called for the diversification of AI development. Other recommended defenses include retiring legacy software, implementing secure-by-design practices, and integrating AI tools into defensive security operations.
