BJP Overhauls National Leadership to Prepare for 2027 Elections
BJP President Nitin Nabin restructured the party's national team, appointing Smriti Irani to a key role and replacing long-time IT chief Amit Malviya.
The Bharatiya Janata Party executed a comprehensive organizational overhaul on August 17, 2026, under the direction of National President Nitin Nabin. The reshuffle appointed 65 office-bearers, including 13 vice presidents, 16 national secretaries, and eight national general secretaries. A primary objective of the recast is preparation for the 2027 electoral cycle, specifically the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, where the party seeks to recover from poor performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
Key appointments include former Union Minister Smriti Irani as national general secretary for Uttar Pradesh and former Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje as national vice president. Union Minister Piyush Goyal was named national treasurer. The party also appointed new state in-charges for critical regions: Vinod Tawde for Uttar Pradesh, Satish Poonia for Punjab, and Tarun Chugh for Gujarat.
In a significant shift in digital strategy, the party replaced Amit Malviya, who led the IT cell for 11 years, with Deepak Mhaskey as the new social media convenor. This change aims to pivot the party's digital narrative toward development and economic achievements. To further engage Gen Z voters, the party launched a Student Feedback Programme in Rajasthan to address youth concerns such as paper leaks, following guidance from RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat that younger generations require discussion rather than orders.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi endorsed the new team, stating it blends organizational experience with grassroots connectivity. The restructured leadership emphasizes diversity, including 12 women and representatives from marginalized communities and the Northeast.
