Sergey Lavrov Warns NATO Arctic Buildup Risks Armed Confrontation

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned that NATO is transforming the Arctic into a new military front designed to contain Russia and its partners. Lavrov accused the alliance of driving the region toward militarization through the Arctic Sentry initiative and large-scale exercises across Norway, Finland, and Greenland, stating these activities increase the risk of an armed confrontation with disastrous consequences.

Recent military activity includes a March exercise in Norway and Finland involving 32,500 troops and current drills on Jan Mayen island intended to create a joint kill web. This buildup follows an attempt by U.S. President Donald Trump to annex Greenland, a move the United States justified by claiming the territory faced threats from Russia and China.

Beyond military maneuvers, the European Union has imposed sanctions on Russian Arctic oil and gas development to restrict access to deep-water drilling technology. While Lavrov maintains that Russia seeks to preserve the Arctic as an area of peace, he identified China and India as key strategic partners in the region.
