Trump Uses Golden Share to Block U.S. Steel Plant Shutdown

President Donald Trump invoked a government veto power to prevent U.S. Steel from halting production at its Granite City plant, saving approximately 800 jobs.

President Donald Trump invoked a "golden share" authority to block U.S. Steel from shutting down production at its Granite City Works plant in Illinois. The authority, a veto power over specific corporate moves, was a condition for the White House's approval of Nippon Steel's $14.1 billion acquisition of U.S. Steel in June. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick informed U.S. Steel CEO Dave Burritt that the administration would exercise this power to ensure operations continued, which prevented the facility from being idled in October or November 2025.

U.S. Steel had planned to stop processing raw steel slabs at the site to maximize production at facilities in Pennsylvania and Indiana, claiming the move provided "future flexibility." While the company promised to maintain the pay and employment of nearly 800 workers until 2027, the United Steelworkers union accused the company of attempting to "wiggle out of its commitments."

Following the government intervention, U.S. Steel reversed its decision and announced it would continue processing slabs indefinitely. The company stated it found a solution to maintain slab consumption and maintains it is in full compliance with the national security agreement. The intervention is part of a broader trend of government oversight in private industry intended to safeguard domestic manufacturing and national security.
