Stellantis Considers Sale of Brampton Assembly Plant

Unifor, the union representing Canadian autoworkers, announced that Stellantis NV is considering the closure and sale of its Brampton Assembly plant in Ontario. The facility has been idled since 2023 or 2024 for retooling to produce the Jeep Compass, but the automaker paused those plans in early 2025 and moved production to Illinois after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on Canadian goods.

While Stellantis has not provided formal written notice of closure, the company has indicated an intent to discuss a sale with another firm. The automaker stated its focus remains on finding a sustainable manufacturing solution as it prepares for collective bargaining with Unifor, whose current contract expires September 20.

Canadian officials from the Treasury Board of Canada have threatened to sue Stellantis to recoup government subsidies provided for the plant's modernization. Unifor President Lana Payne criticized the potential move, describing it as a gut punch to the union and its members.
