RSF Besieges El Obeid Sparking Humanitarian Crisis Warnings

The Rapid Support Forces have encircled El Obeid and launched drone strikes, prompting UN and Arab League warnings of a looming human rights catastrophe.

The city of El Obeid, capital of North Kordofan state, has emerged as a critical flash-point in the civil war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The RSF has effectively encircled the city from the north, west, and south, conducting sustained drone attacks against residential neighborhoods, fuel stations, and hospitals. In June alone, the city saw 27 drone strikes, the highest monthly total since the conflict began. UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk reported that 15 of those strikes killed at least 45 people and injured 41 others.

Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy warned that more than 500,000 civilians are currently under siege. He cautioned that the situation could mirror the atrocities seen in El Fasher. Amnesty International echoed these concerns, describing the violence in El Fasher as a "playbook" that could be repeated in El Obeid. In response, the RSF has denied the accusations, claiming it operates in compliance with international law.

Strategic analysts note that the Sudanese Armed Forces must defend El Obeid because it controls the primary road to the capital, Khartoum, and its twin city, Omdurman. In response to the escalating violence, the UN Human Rights Council adopted a resolution calling for an urgent investigation into civilian violations. Nabil Fahmy has further proposed a five-party international mechanism including the UN, EU, African Union, Arab League, and IGAD to coordinate a response to the crisis.
