Trump Administration Increases Enforcement and Vetting for Immigrant Spouses

The Trump administration has intensified immigration enforcement and vetting for spouses of U.S. citizens while the Supreme Court affirms broad executive authority over deportation.

The Trump administration has implemented sweeping immigration policy changes that increase scrutiny and enforcement for spouses of U.S. citizens and their fiancés. These measures include pausing immigrant visas for approximately 75 countries, imposing travel bans on 39 nations without exceptions for military families, and requiring more intrusive green-card interviews. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services now mandates additional identity verification and considers whether applicants returned to their home countries for interviews as a factor in approvals.

Simultaneously, the Supreme Court of the United States issued rulings affirming broad executive authority to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS), limit asylum applications, and deport immigrants to third-party countries. The Court also ruled that agents may stop individuals based on perceived race, ethnicity, or language. However, the Court blocked President Trump from altering birthright citizenship via executive order, upholding existing laws.

These policies have had immediate real-world consequences. In South Florida, the termination of TPS for Venezuelans coincided with devastating earthquakes on June 24, leaving over 100 deportees missing. The administration also reported more than 10,000 detentions in less than one week. Advocacy groups like American Families United report a chilling effect, noting that fear of indefinite detention has led some mixed-status couples to avoid the legal system or choose self-deportation.
