Pierre Poilievre Demands Fuel Tax Cuts Before Federal Budget
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre urged Prime Minister Mark Carney to eliminate federal diesel taxes and reduce spending ahead of the November 5 budget.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre issued a series of fiscal demands to Prime Minister Mark Carney in a letter sent ahead of the federal budget scheduled for November 5. Poilievre called for the elimination of all federal taxes on diesel until Canada Day, specifically requesting the suspension of the GST on fuel and the permanent removal of the fuel standard tax.
Poilievre criticized the current administration for overseeing the largest deficit since the COVID-19 pandemic and increasing the cost of living. He urged the Liberal government to reduce inflationary spending and meet previous commitments to lower the debt-to-GDP and deficit-to-GDP ratios.
Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne responded that the upcoming budget will outline plans to build a more resilient and affordable Canada. However, the Parliamentary Budget Office has predicted that the government will fail to maintain a declining deficit-to-GDP ratio.
