Pakistan Partially Rolls Back Record Fuel Price Hikes Amid Protests

The Government of Pakistan reversed a portion of record petrol price increases after widespread protests and political instability triggered by a Middle East energy crisis.

The Government of Pakistan implemented record fuel price increases on April 3, 2026, raising petrol by 43% to PKR 458.4 per litre and diesel by 55% to PKR 520.35. Officials attributed the surge to global oil volatility and supply disruptions caused by the US-Iran war and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, while noting pressure from the International Monetary Fund to maintain a primary surplus. The hike triggered immediate inflation in transport fares and essential commodities, with the Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry warning that transportation costs had doubled.

Public anger manifested in widespread protests in Karachi and Lahore, while opposition lawmakers in the National Assembly shredded the legislative agenda and forced an adjournment. Political leaders from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and Jamaat-e-Islami threatened nationwide strikes and a mass revolution to topple the coalition government. In response, provincial governments in Punjab and Sindh introduced targeted subsidies for motorcyclists and farmers, and the federal government made public transport in Islamabad free for 30 days.

Following the intense backlash, the government partially rolled back the increase on April 4, cutting the petroleum levy by Rs 80 and reducing petrol prices to PKR 378 per litre. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated this revised rate would remain for at least one month. Despite the rollback, economists and industry bodies, including the Pakistan Vanaspati Manufacturers Association, warned of a continuing inflationary spiral affecting food and cooking oil prices.
