AI and Government Cuts Drive Surge in US Job Losses

U.S. employers cut over 806,000 jobs in 2025 as generative AI and Department of Government Efficiency budget cuts accelerate workforce reductions.

U.S. employers have eliminated over 806,000 jobs in 2025, with July alone seeing 62,075 cuts—a 140% increase over July 2024. Data from Challenger, Gray & Christmas indicates that generative AI and technological updates are primary drivers, causing over 10,000 job losses in the first seven months of the year. These cuts primarily target entry-level roles, as companies like McKinsey & Company deploy AI agents to replace junior-level tasks in data collection and visualization.

Corporate leadership has increasingly integrated AI into hiring strategies. Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke informed staff that the company would stop new hires if AI could perform the job, while Duolingo uses AI fluency to determine promotions and hiring. These shifts have contributed to a 15% year-over-year drop in entry-level corporate postings and a rise in unemployment for recent college graduates to approximately 6%.

Simultaneously, the Department of Government Efficiency has overseen 292,294 government sector job cuts this year. These federal budget reductions have also impacted healthcare and non-profit sectors through funding losses. Other economic pressures include a 249% surge in retail layoffs driven by inflation and tariffs. Amidst this volatility, President Donald Trump fired Erika McEntarfer following downward payroll revisions and a sluggish July jobs report.
