Greg Abbott Raises $9 Million From Data Center Donors
Texas Governor Greg Abbott raised $9 million from data center-linked donors while simultaneously moving to regulate the industry and end its tax breaks.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott raised approximately $9 million from donors tied to the data center industry between July 2025 and October 2026. The fundraising occurred as Abbott sought to tighten regulations on the sector, including pausing new grid connection approvals for a statewide audit and calling for the termination of major tax breaks.
An analysis by The Texas Tribune found that $4.9 million of the contributions came from direct operators and developers, while $4.1 million came from indirect financial links. Other high-ranking Republican officials also received significant funding, including Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, who received over $1.6 million, and Comptroller Don Huffines, who received approximately $1 million.
Democratic opponent Gina Hinojosa has used the donations to criticize Abbott, claiming he accepted millions from industry interests while misleading the public about his record. Abbott's campaign has dismissed these claims, stating that the governor's primary goals are to protect the state electric grid and eliminate outdated incentives. Critics argue the contributions indicate an industry effort to influence the terms of future regulations.
